      British couturier (b. July 17, 1909, London, Eng.—d. March 5, 2003, Langford, Oxfordshire, Eng.), dressed Queen Elizabeth II of England for half a century and was credited with having been a major influence on the menswear fashion revolution of the 1960s. Though his background was in business, he was hired by the design house Lachasse, known for its tailoring, in 1934, and by 1939 he was designing the entire collection. Amies founded his own design house, Hardy Amies Ltd. on Savile Row in 1945, and in 1955 he was appointed dressmaker to the queen. In 1959 he added a line of men's clothes and soon was designing for the tailoring chain Hepworth's. Amies sold his firm to the Luxury Brands Group in 2001 and retired later that year. He was knighted in 1989.
