wind shear

wind shear
/wind/
1. the rate at which wind velocity changes from point to point in a given direction.
2. a condition, dangerous to aircraft, in which the speed or direction of the wind changes abruptly. Cf. microburst.
[1940-45]

Rate of change of wind velocity with distance perpendicular to the wind direction.

A very narrow zone of abrupt velocity change is known as a shear line. Wind shear is observed near the ground and in jet streams, where it may be associated with clear-air turbulence. Vertical wind shear is closely associated with the vertical flux of momentum, heat, and water vapour.

rapid change in wind velocity or direction. A very narrow zone of abrupt velocity change is known as a shear line. Wind shear is observed both near the ground and in jet streams (jet stream), where it may be associated with clear-air turbulence. Vertical wind shear that causes turbulence is closely associated with the vertical and horizontal transport of momentum, heat, and water vapour.
