Frederick I, Known as Frederick Bar·ba·ros·sa (bär'bə-rŏsʹə, -rôsʹə) 1123?-1190.
Holy Roman emperor (1152-1190) and king of Germany and Italy. After quelling the rebellious German nobility, he failed to subdue papal authority in Italy and conceded supremacy to Pope Alexander III (1177). He drowned while leading the Third Crusade.
