Zhvania, Zurab
▪ 2006

Georgian politician (b. Dec. 9, 1963, Tbilisi, Georgian S.S.R., U.S.S.R.—d. Feb. 3, 2005, Tbilisi, Georgia), was a reform-minded prime minister of Georgia. Zhvania studied biology at Tbilisi State University, graduating in 1985, but left a promising scientific career to found (1988) and lead a political party, the Georgian Greens. He was elected to the parliament in 1992, where he advanced quickly and became a protégé of then president Eduard Shevardnadze. Zhvania was elected speaker of the parliament in 1995. Distressed by the stagnation and corruption of the Shevardnadze administration, however, Zhvania left the government in 2001 and founded another party, the United Democrats. Seen as a liberal moderating influence in politics, Zhvania became prime minister in the shuffle that followed Shevardnadze's departure from office in 2004. He reportedly died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty space heater.
