      American ballerina (b. Dec. 5, 1947, Springfield, Ohio—d. Jan. 29, 2006, Chevy Chase, Md.), excelled in both classical and contemporary roles, especially during her tenure as a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet (1966–75). Besides originating roles in ballets by Gerald Arpino that included Kettentanz, Trinity, and Confetti, she performed such roles as Titania in Frederick Ashton's The Dream and the Street Dancer in Léonide Massine's Le Beau Danube. After leaving the Joffrey, Wright performed as a soloist with American Ballet Theatre (ABT; 1975–83); danced on Broadway in the musical Merlin (1982); and appeared in films, including The Turning Point (1977), and on television. She also became a teacher and a choreographer, directed ABT's summer theatre programs (1997–2003), was chair of the Joffrey/New School University dance-degree program, and from 2004 served as director of the Washington (D.C.) School of Ballet.
